Box//

"Many designers try thinking out of the box, I want to try thinking without the box."

White ?

Minimalist, sharp structures and clean cuts, Origami offers numerous solutions and ideas in design, fashion, home, and technology. I do not want to think Origami structures as only from small papers and creating an object. But I wish to see and stretch to be able to think of innovative origami concepts and products from manufacturers, artists and engineers around the world.

Something for me to ponder:

a) Why is most oragimi-cal structures white?
b) Is it because its by the Japanese?

NO. 973, origami chair X James Dieter

I know this is 8 years ago, but i still find this pretty cool. Somehow one of my inspirations for doing furns for last semester.

In 2003, designboom and 100% design organized an international design competition: 100% folding chairs. There were more than 1300 participants, from 84 countries, 470 prototype-entries received, and only one winner. On our blog, our winner would have been entry no. 973, titled Origami Chair from Brooklyn-based design studio founded by James Dieter.

Constructed with polycarbonate and polyester mesh, the chair folds together from a single sheet into a three dimensional structure, strong enough to withstand the weight of an adult.
Check out dform -  you’ll find more James Dieter manipulating of flat sheet materials such as wood veneer or plastic and transform them into dynamic three dimensional forms.

My work, last semester. Trying to move on from this into something else.

Origami House Inspired

This is one of the few that I was searching for. Folding Structures + Architecture.

From World Architecture News, origami lends a hand to UK architects creating this private residental extension. Because of the existing house’s unique geometric properties coupled with origami’s indefinite possibilities, the extension folds at the rear of the residency to create a new kitchen and dining space.

Frameless glass windows create dramatic views to both the sky and the garden, whilst the black zinc cladding provides a striking contrast to this fragmented transparency.

Between the folds film X Vanessa Gould

I can't wait to share this! One of the most amazing the Science of Art. This is the art of Folding.

Between the Folds work-in-progress screening will be at the August 2008 Rhode Island International Film Festival. Written and Directed by Vanessa Gould, she helps initiate a dialogue about this mysterious and misunderstood art with the guidance of ten renownthed origami masters.

Origami House X Yasuhiro Yamashita

My previous work was on Origami room. Now, this is an inspiration. Origami house! Wonder when can I build this.

This origami inspired house in Tokyo designed by architect Yasuhiro Yamashita of Atelier Takuto shows off excellent lines and shape without sacrificing form and function. Along with an integrated car port, which balances handsomely on a single point at its base; this innovative design is a fantastic solution plaguing crowded urban cities.

Walking City X Raymond Queneau

So, isn't this folding?

Raymond Queneau was a French poet and novelist who told the same story 99 different ways and Exercices de Style is a lab that makes a bold attempt to apply the same idea, but in fashion design. A recent project called Walking City was a study on modular structures of a garment and seeks out how fashion arts and technology are to be intertwined.

Ha-Ori Shelter X IDEOer Joerg

This ingenious and elegant temporary shelter was designed and constructed by IDEOer Joerg Student as a project for the Industrial Design Engineering program at the Royal College of Art in London. Stemming from Student’s exploration of a folding technique inspired by the leaves of a hornbeam tree, the Ha-Ori (Japanese for “folding leaf”) shelter is constructed from corrugated polypropylene that has been folded in a series of trapezoidal shapes to create a rigid structure. When open, the shelter has a diameter of 12.5 ft and a height of 8.5 ft. When folded, the Ha-Ori measures 8.8 ft x 1.5 ft for easy transport.

It looks much like a folding, tessellated. Given that I’m fascinated by both of these topics, this little collapsible hut is very appealing. Now it's making sense, Folding - Origami?

War between Archi + Folding Structures

Wasn't easy narrowing down to a theme, especially when it comes down to 2 of your favourite themes. After much of cancelling, changing 100 times of decision, going round in circles, I've finally decided to do a follow-up from my previous work from Interdisciplinary class, since I kinda think that's my main interest.

Verdict: Folding structures. FTW!
